Anxious, the man pulled on the hemp rope, barely hearing the bells ring out on the surface.
He panics, pulling harder.
He rapidly breathes the limited air in the coffin, saturating it with carbon dioxide. He begins to tire, oxygen becoming scarce.
He only just hears the thuds of footsteps approach and stop above him.
He allows himself to feel hope.
The rope becomes slack and falls into his grave, no longer connected to his alarm system above ground.
The footsteps begin again and dissappear into the distance.
He’s on his own now.
