One Last Try

I watched the black and pregnant clouds for what seems like hours, praying they would not burst.
The fire crackled in front of me, the aroma of cooking meat wafted past my face.
Inevitably, one by one the drops began to fall, fizzing as they hit the fire.
I stared into the centre of the blaze, my heart screaming at me to run; but I had to wait, to be sure.
The thunderous downpour soaked me to the bone, overwhelming the fire, which quickly retreated back into the fuel it came from.
I trembled with anticipation, trying to see through the steam that now dissipated into the cold evening air. No movement, just burnt carcasses and lumber.
I gasped, as one by one, the charred and cracked heads turned and bodies picked themselves up. The eyeless stares, on gaunt faces, looked through my soul.
It worked!
Tears gathered in my eyes, blurring my vision.
“You’re all alive! You’re all alive!” I said running into the group, “I’ve missed you so much.”
I hugged the warm body that swayed in front of me, how good did that feel to the cold body I’d slept next to for weeks.
It groaned, a low purposeful groan. I knew that meant she still loved me!
